Encrypting your media library: why Plex and Jellyfin aren't enough (and the alternative that's coming)

Plex and Jellyfin: great for organizing and streaming
Let's be fair: Plex and Jellyfin do their job very well. They scan your folders, fetch artwork and metadata (TMDB, etc.), sort films and series, and stream it all to your screens, locally or remotely. Jellyfin has the added benefit of being free and open-source.
For management and streaming, they're references. That's not where the problem is.
The blind spot: your files aren't encrypted
Both Plex and Jellyfin read your files as-is, in clear text, on disk. Concretely:
- On your PC or NAS, anyone with access to the machine (or the drive) can open, copy or browse your library.
- On a backup or a lost external drive, same thing: the files are readable.
- On a remote host or cloud, this is the most sensitive point: the host — and anyone who accesses its servers — can technically read your files. You trust them by default.
Disk encryption (BitLocker, VeraCrypt…) helps when the machine is off, but once the system boots and the server is running, the files are in clear text again for applications — and that kind of encryption doesn't follow you onto a third-party host.
What an encrypted multimedia vault brings
The idea is simple: encrypt every file at rest, and decrypt it only on the devices you've authorized. The benefits:
- AES-256 encryption: films, series, music, photos, games, e-books, documents and software are sealed. Without the key, a file is unreadable — gibberish.
- Store anywhere: locally, on a cheap standard host, or via P2P. The file stays encrypted everywhere; the host only sees undecipherable data.
- Readable only on your devices: playback and decryption happen client-side, on authorized machines — not on the server.

This is the use case that changes everything. "Standard" online storage costs a fraction of a specialized cloud, but we hesitate to put our media library there for fear of the host's eyes (or a leak).
With a client-side encrypted approach, the math changes: you get the cheapest storage while keeping files undecipherable to the host. You get the best of both worlds — cost and privacy.

Do Plex or Jellyfin encrypt files?
